Research Note 1 - Why This Research?

Conditions for Flourishing After Menopause
I began this research with a simple question:
What are the conditions that enable women to flourish in the years after menopause?
Much of the conversation around menopause understandably focuses on symptoms, treatment and what can go wrong. I wanted to look beyond that, towards the wider experience of postmenopausal life: identity, agency, relationships, work, creativity, purpose, belonging and contribution.
Women may live for decades after menopause, carrying considerable knowledge, experience and capacity. Yet we still know relatively little about what helps those years feel meaningful, expansive and fully lived — or what gets in the way.
Through qualitative interviews with postmenopausal women, I am exploring these questions through lived experience rather than beginning with a fixed idea of what flourishing should look like.
I am interested not only in menopause as a biological transition, but in what becomes possible afterwards — and in the bodily, relational, material, cultural and environmental conditions that help women come more fully into their lives.
